Order of Christian Initiation of Adults

OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) – Good Shepherd Parish

Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)

A welcoming, step‑by‑step process for adults who are curious about the Catholic faith – whether you're unbaptized, baptized in another tradition, or baptized Catholic and seeking First Communion or Confirmation.

What is OCIA?

OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) is the Church's process for helping adults encounter Jesus Christ, learn the teachings of the Catholic Church, and – if they choose – receive the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism (if needed), Confirmation, and Eucharist. It is formation, prayer, community, and liturgical rites – not a quick class, but a journey taken in community.

Who is OCIA for?

  • Adults who have never been baptized.
  • Adults baptized in other Christian traditions who wish to become Catholic.
  • Adults baptized Catholic who never received First Communion and/or Confirmation.
  • Anyone wanting to know more about the Catholic faith – no obligation to join.

Why consider joining?

  • No pressure: start with questions and discernment; there is no immediate commitment.
  • Learn & grow: Scripture, Catholic teaching, sacraments, prayer, and how faith shapes daily life.
  • Belong: join a community of seekers and supportive sponsors.
  • Celebrate: for those who move forward, initiation typically takes place at the Easter Vigil.

What to expect

Most OCIA programs run weekly from fall through spring and include learning sessions, prayer, and rites integrated with the parish liturgical life. You will be matched with a sponsor, invited to attend Mass regularly, and supported by catechists and the parish community.

Common timeline

  • Inquiry / Precatechumenate: Ask questions, hear the Gospel, and discern.
  • Rite of Acceptance / Welcome: A public ritual marking entry into the process.
  • Catechumenate: Regular formation – study, prayer, and community.
  • Purification & Enlightenment (Lent): Deeper spiritual preparation and special rites.
  • Easter Vigil: Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism/Confirmation/Eucharist) for those ready.
  • Mystagogy: Ongoing integration and formation after initiation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to join the Church if I attend?
No. OCIA begins with inquiry and discernment – attendance does not commit you to joining. Many people attend to learn or to accompany a friend.
Is there a cost?
There is no fee to participate.
What if I need to pause?
You may pause the process and return when the time is right – OCIA is designed to meet people where they are.
